MYTHS AND FACTS 1
Myth: Counselling is exclusively for people with mental health diagnosis.
Fact: As outlined in our Reasons for Counselling, counselling can be beneficial for anyone facing life's challenges and seeking to enhance their quality of life.
Increasing number of individuals are turning to counselling as one of the many means of "maintaining quality of life". It is a form of a "self-care" that boosts overall sense of well-being, agency, self-efficacy and optimal functioning, akin to routine practices such as routine physicals, massages or dental cleaning.
MYTHS AND FACTS 3
Myth: Counselling is expensive...
Fact: As you can see under Fees, there are different options for payment depending on your coverage and situations.
MYTHS AND FACTS 4
Myth: Counseling aggravates issues and fosters dependency on the counselor.
Fact: It is common to hear about someone who has been in counseling for an extended period with little to no improvement, or in some cases, appears to be deteriorating.
It is important to recognize that while counseling can occasionally lead to adverse outcomes, a key responsibility of a skilled therapist is to vigilantly track your progress with you and adhere to the principle of "do no harm."
It is also important to acknowledge potential risk for developing dependent therapist-client relationship, however, skilled clinicians are trained to monitor quality of their therapeutic relationship with the clients and foster healthy relationship where clients' sense of agency and sense of self-efficacy are operating at its core.
MYTHS AND FACTS 2
Myth: Going to counselling is a sign of "weakness".
Fact: This myth is so far from the truth, as choosing to pursue counselling actually reflects "strength".
It takes wisdom to know when to seek assistance, it takes courage to reach out, and it takes commitment to make changes in your life with your counsellor.
